The last day of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha session witnessed a massive uproar among the MLAs. Punjab Assembly Session's last day took an ugly turn when a heated exchange broke out between AAP MLA Manwinder Giaspura from Ludhiana and Congress MLA Avtar ‘Bawa’ Henry Jr. from Jalandhar North.
The argument erupted when AAP MLA Manwinder Giaspura accused Henry’s family of being involved in the drug trade. Irked by the accusations, MLA Bawa Henry started hurling abusive words.
The incident sparked a massive uproar in the House while Deputy Speaker Jai Krishan Rouri was presiding. Giaspura objected strongly, stating, “If a legislator from an upper caste was abused, action would have been taken immediately. I have reached here because of the Constitution. If justice can’t be ensured for Dalits like me, I will remain silent.”
The Deputy Speaker assured that action would be taken and a notice would be issued against the MLA who used derogatory language.
Leader of Opposition Pratap Singh Bajwa intervened, asking the Speaker to examine the official video recordings to determine who initiated the confrontation. Later, Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan entered the House and was briefed on the matter.
LoP Bajwa acknowledged that while the Congress MLA’s reaction was inappropriate, the AAP MLA had made unsubstantiated allegations. He apologized on behalf of his party’s MLA, following which the Assembly was adjourned sine die (indefinitely).
