Jalandhar police launch strict drive against firecracker sales from July 8–September 7, 2025

Jalandhar Police Commissioner Dhanpreet Kaur has ordered restrictions on firecracker use, sale, and storage, following Supreme Court directives.

Jalandhar's Police Commissioner and IPS Officer Dhanpreet Kaur have put out an order controlling the sale, stock, and use of firecrackers within the limits of the Police Commissionerate of Jalandhar. This complies with the order of the Supreme Court in writ petition 728 of 2015 and is meant to curb the health, safety, and environmental hazards posed during public celebrations.

Important points of the order

1. Retail sales exclusively at licensed outlets

  • There shall be no sale of firecrackers except at shops authorized under The Explosives Rules 2008.
  • Sale or purchase from any other place is expressly forbidden.

2. Prohibition of fireworks in sensitive zones  

  • No firecrackers shall be burst or lit in Silence Zones such as around educational institutions and hospitals.
  • No firecrackers within one hundred yards of IOC, BPCL, and HPCL oil terminals.

3. Prohibition of imported and toy firecrackers

  • There is a complete ban on imported firecrackers, including those that are in the shape of toys or electronic items.

4. Fireworks only by licensed dealers

  • Only Indian manufacturers with proper licensing can buy or sell licensed fireworks.
  • The sale and use of Chinese smuggled firecrackers and any other foreign-origin fireworks is banned.

5. Only green crackers are allowed

  • The Supreme Court permits “green crackers” only. Therefore, these are the only ones allowed to be sold.
  • Emission standards for pollution, as set by the Supreme Court, disallow all high-pollution emission series crackers and other such crackers.

6. No use or exhibition of foreign fireworks permitted

  • License holders shall not have foreign fireworks in their possession for sale, public display, or any sort of exhibit.

7. Time-bound use of firecrackers

  • Diwali: 8:00 p.m. till 10:00 p.m.
  • Christmas Eve & New Year: 11:55 p.m. till half past midnight.
  • Gurpurab: 4:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

8. No placing setting of firecrackers

  • No storage of firecrackers is allowed aside from places with valid licenses.

Duration of the order

These orders have been set to remain effective from July 8, 2025, to September 7, 2025. 

As per the official document, this directive is intended for matters related to public health, safety, and the environment stemming from the Supreme Court directions on controlling air and noise pollution because of the use of fireworks.
