A land dispute in the upscale Steven Enclave area of Baradari, Jalandhar, escalated into violence on Saturday morning when a government-appointed gunman allegedly opened fire, injuring a man in both legs.

The incident occurred near PIMS Hospital, where Harpreet Singh, the plot owner, was overseeing soil dumping on his property. A confrontation broke out when Avinash, a resident from the opposite house, arrived with his officially deputed gunman Ashwini and objected to the activity. In the heat of the moment, the gunman allegedly fired a bullet.

The single shot reportedly entered one leg of Harpreet and exited into the other, causing serious injury. Harpreet was immediately rushed to PIMS Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.

ACP Jagrup Kaur, who visited the site, confirmed that a bullet was fired and said, “Preliminary investigation shows that the shot was fired by a government security personnel. We have recovered the bullet casing from the scene and further inquiry is underway.”

Residents of Steven Enclave expressed alarm over the use of a licensed firearm during a civil dispute. Many alleged that the police arrived late and demanded strict action against the accused.

Police have begun recording statements from both parties. Authorities stated that the role of the government gunman is under review, and action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
