The decomposed body of a young man was discovered in an upstairs room of the Shahkot police station premises late Sunday night. The deceased has been identified as 26-year-old Gurbhej Singh, also known as “Bheja,” a resident of Bajwa Kalan village in Shahkot.
Gurbhej Singh, a brilliant player, had joined the Shahkot police station a few months ago to serve tea and snacks to the personnel, as per police and family sources. Gurbhej set off for work on Friday morning as usual but failed to report back home. His family members started looking for him but could not get even a hint of his whereabouts.
Discovery after three days of absence
Police officers at the station had no idea about Gurbhej's whereabouts for three days. There was a stench spreading through the police station on Sunday evening. The officers had located the source of the smell as a room on the roof. They found Gurbhej's decomposing body there. The body is suspected to have been in the room for a period of three days.
When informed, police seized the body and had it taken to Nakodar Civil Hospital for a post-mortem. The body was subsequently released to the family to perform last rites, with a huge gathering of villagers and police officials.
Possible cause: Poisonous bite suspected
Talking about the incident, a police official upheld the death and informed that the room in which the deceased body was discovered hardly receives a visit by police personnel. Preliminary investigations indicate that the cause of Gurbhej's death could have been a poisonous insect or animal bite.
The case left the local community and police force reeling, wondering how it was that the body of the young man was not seen by anybody for days on the police station compound.
