Ahead of cyclone Tauktae, heavy rain lash Kerala, coastal areas badly affected

Cyclone storm over the archipelago has caused huge damage to the coastal areas in Kerala.

The after-effects of the cyclone storm caused over Lakshadweep in the Arabian Sea and another adjoining archipelago in the southeast central area of the Arabian Sea during the last six hours has caused huge damage to the coastal area in Kerala. 

The disturbance was approximately 290 kilometers away from Kannur, but due to heavy rain across the state and the touching sea is becoming rough, the government has to set up numerous camps all over the state to move people to a safe place.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has informed the state about the arrangements done by the authorities to face any calamity arising out of the cyclonic storm. 

Vijayan said, “Even though, Kerala is not in the predicted path of the cyclone, heavy rains, strong winds, and strong sea gusts are expected in the state till May 16. We should exercise utmost cautions in districts and adjoining districts where the Meteorological Department has issued a Red and Orange Alert.” 

Indian Meteorological Department stated that cyclone storm (Tauktae) is very likely to intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm in the next 24 hours and is expected to move towards the north-northwest area and may reach near the Gujarat coast by May 18 morning.

The worst affected areas include the coastal hamlets in the state capitals, parts of Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasargode. 

The disturbance started on Friday night, heavy rains and strong winds were witnessed by the Kerala natives. The power supply was distorted in account of the disturbance but in many places, it was restored on Saturday.

It is a hard time for the people of Kerala, who are already battling with the novel pandemic. The state is under Covid lockdown till May 23. The Chief Minister of the state has said that May is a crucial month as Covid cases are increasing and monsoon would soon arrive in the state.
