Mahashay Dharampal Gulati  owner of MDH popularly  known as ‘King of Spices’ passed away on Thursday morning at the age of  98 due to cardiac arrest.

 According to reports he was undergoing treatment at Delhi’s Mata Chanan Devi Hospital and passed away on Thursday morning.

An Indian Businessman who was famously known as ‘MDH Uncle’, ‘Dadaji’, ‘King of Spices’ was owner and CEO of Mahashian Di Hatti(MDH) and was born in Sialkot on 27 March 1923. He took over the business from his father Mahashay Chunni Lal Gulati, who was founder of MDH.

After partition his family migrated from Pakistan to India and spent time in a refugee camp in Amritsar. After some time he shifted to Delhi in search of work. It was in Karol Bagh, Delhi that Mahashay Dharampal Gulati opened his first spice shop. His supremacy continued to build up from 1953 in Chandni Chowk, 1959 in Kirti Nagar, and so on.

It’s all because of his hard work that today MDH masala is worldwide famous.  MDH has a business of around Rs 2,000 crore claiming to be the best spices seller around the globe. It sells over 45 varieties of blended and whole spices, exporting to more than 50 countries. The company has 15 factories across India, 1,500 employees, over 1,000 distributors and over 800,000 retail dealers.

In 2019, he was honored with the highest civilian award, Padma Bhushan by Government of India.

98-year old was and always will be the most inspiring entrepreneurs of India.

The philosophy of Mahashay Dharampal Gulati was that “Give to the world the best you can and the best will come to you automatically” has made him a big man and will always be remembered because of his supremacy and hegemony.

In crux the journey of ‘King of Spices’

·         He had 2 brothers and 5 sisters. He was married at the age of 18 to Leelawanti  and had 2 sons and 6 daughters. His one son passed away in 1992 after his wife died in the same year.

·         He was a school dropout. His father wanted him to study but he did not seem to have heart in studies, therefore he left the school in class 5.

·         Before he came to India after partition his father was having a spice shop in Sialkot after which he named his company MDH – “Mahashian Di Hatti”. Their shop was famously known as ‘Deggi Mirch Wale’.

·         Before establishing his shop in Karol Bagh, he worked in a Soap factory, a Rice factory and a Fabric factory. But nothing fascinated him much as his father’s business does.

·         He is a self-made Billionaire. He dedicated his whole life to make MDH a brand and to take it to a point where it is today.

·      Despite his old age, he used to visit factories to ensure the smooth functioning. He was very conscious about his health and used to wake up at around 4:30 am.

·         He donated around 90% of his salary to charity under the banner of the Mahashay Chunni Lal Charitable Trust. This trust operates a hospital in Delhi, along with 4 schools and a mobile hospital for slum dwellers. Even after the old age, he worked for over 12-14 hours every day and ran over 20 schools.
