The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for rain in 16 districts of Punjab as the southwest monsoon continues its advance into northern India. The weather department says that conditions are favorable for the monsoon to enter Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh today.
Rainfall has already been recorded overnight in several parts of Punjab, bringing relief from the heat and a noticeable drop in temperatures. The maximum temperature across the state has decreased by an average of 1.7°C, and most areas are now recording temperatures 1.6°C below normal.
Districts under yellow alert today:
Pathankot, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, SBS Nagar (Nawanshahr), Ludhiana, Rupnagar, Mohali, Fatehgarh Sahib, Patiala, Sangrur, Mansa, and Barnala.
Latest temperatures recorded in Punjab:
• Bathinda: 40.2°C
• Amritsar: 37.6°C
• Ludhiana: 34.8°C
• Patiala: 35°C
• Mohali: 32.3°C
Heavy Rain Expected Till June 26
The IMD has warned of widespread rainfall across Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh till June 26. On June 22, some areas of Chandigarh and North Haryana could experience very heavy downpours, accompanied by thunderstorms and winds reaching speeds of 30–40 km/h.
Residents are advised to stay updated through official weather bulletins and take precautions against waterlogging, slippery roads, and potential power disruptions.
The arrival of the monsoon is likely to bring much-needed relief from the ongoing heatwave conditions in parts of North India, but authorities have urged the public to remain cautious during intense weather activity.
