The Canadian city, Brampton has got its first turban-wearing Sikh woman Councillor. A respiratory therapist by profession, Indo-Canadian healthcare worker Navjit Kaur Brar has been elected as the Councillor of Brampton city in the recent Municipal council polls.

Navjit Kaur Brar (born on May 20, 1986) is a mother of three kids, a son and two daughters. She was born and brought up in Brampton. Her parents migrated from Punjab to Canada in the 1980s. Brar completed her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto followed by a Diploma in Respiratory Therapy from Canadore College in North Bay, Ontario.

In 2011, Kaur started her career as a healthcare professional by joining Lincare Inc. in Richmond Hill, Ontario, as a respiratory therapist. She started at the Brampton Civic Hospital in 2013 and has been with the William Osler Health System ever since.

She won the elections from Wards 2 and 6, defeating Jermaine Chambers, a former Conservative MP candidate for Brampton West. Navjit's Vision for Brampton is that she will fight for better services and deliver the results that Bramptonians have been asking for.

Building new infrastructure, lowering crime, and improving traffic safety are Brar's three key areas of concentration. As part of her campaign, she knocked on over 40,000 doors and spoke to over 22,500 residents in the last two months.

"Over the past 3 years, I've spoken to countless Bramptonians and the sentiment I hear is that they are all hurting, they feel unheard, they feel left behind. With the rising cost of living It's getting harder to raise and provide for your family in Brampton... As your city councilor I will fight for better services for all Bramptonians and ensure that your voices are heard," Brar had said in her campaign pitch.
