LED lights exported from China now subject to newly defined quality checks

This could affect not only China, but India also

India China Import

The Indian government has released new criteria for evaluating imports from China of LED (light-emitting diode) lights. The new release is not a tariff, but may end up adversely impacting Chinese exporters.

In addition, the importers on this side of the Indo-China border may also be affected. The importers and Indian retailers of the LEDs may have reasons to be concerned as China provides supply for a large percentage of the product for household and otherwise usage in India. Also, LED lighting solutions are a key contributor to the income of electronics businesses.

As per an official notification, samples will be picked up on random basis from randomly selected consignments and will be sent to BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards)-recognized labs for testing.

It is interesting to note that the timing coincides with the festival of lights, Diwali, when every household and commercial entity in India will be lighting its premises.

"Further, for such consignments, clearance would be given by Customs to only those consignments where the randomly selected sample has complied with the requirements of standards for the defined parameters," it said.

If the sample fails to meet the requirements of standard, the concerned consignments will be sent back or will be destroyed at the cost of the importer.

Amid the tensions in the border and volatile diplomatic relations, this is one among the series of measures by the Indian government in terms of imports, which would directly or indirectly impact China.
