Lohri, the folk festival of traditions, is celebrated with great pomp all over India, especially in North India, just a day before Makar Sankranti. On this day everyone celebrates together with their friends and family. It is believed that worshiping by lighting a fire on this day brings happiness and prosperity.

How is Lohri Celebrated?

The new crop is harvested on the auspicious festival of Lohri. It is celebrated just a day before Makar Sankranti. This method is prevalent all over India. But, it has special importance in Punjab and some parts of Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. In this festival, a fire is lit in an open place with wood or cow dung cakes. Then the first ‘Bhog’ of the harvested crop is offered to the fire. After this, everyone goes around the fire and congratulates each other by singing songs and local folks.

Makar Sankranti means Lohri is celebrated on January 13, just a day before January 14, 2023. But, this year the festival of Makar Sankranti will be celebrated on 15 January, so Lohri will be celebrated a day prior on the 14th of January instead of the 13th. The auspicious time for worship of Lohri on January 14 is at 8.57 pm. After this, people can do other programs by lighting Lohri.

What is offered during the ceremony?

Lohri has great importance from a religious point of view. It is widely believed that on this day, following the rituals and going by the auspicious time one’s wishes and good luck shower upon them and they get blessed by prosperity and good luck.

On the day of Lohri, sesame seeds, jaggery, gajak, rewdi, and peanuts are offered on the fire. Lohri is celebrated with great zeal and fervor in every house wishing to keep their home away from all the evil spirits and powers, praying for a good life ahead for their loved ones.
