New Delhi: Taking a dig at the opposition, Bhartiya Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy has said that the Congress party only thinks of Italian women's interest and not of Muslim women residing in India. A day after the Opposition obstructed the ruling government's attempt to implement the instant Triple Talaq Bill in Rajya Sabha, he said, "It is a shame on them that they want to postpone it by taking it to select committee. Why? We have debated it enough. The whole country has been debating it."

He further criticised the Congress party and said, "But we are sorry that the Congress party thinks only of Italian women's interest and not Muslim women's interest in India."

The revised bill which aims to make instant Triple Talaq a punishable offence was stalled in Rajya Sabha on 31 December 2018. The Upper House of the Parliament was adjourned till 2 January 2019, after the opposition created a ruckus over the bill and demanded that it should be sent to the Select Committee.

Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad in the party's defence said, "This is such an important bill which can positively or negatively affect the lives of crores of people can't be passed just like this without going to a select committee."
