Near about 12 people have been killed while 9 others are grievously injured in a mass shooting in Monterey Park, east of Los Angeles in the US’ of California late on Saturday night.
Based on the initial reports of the incident which took place during the Chinese Lunar Year that saw the footfall of over a thousand people said that more than a dozen have been injured, while many others succumbed to their injuries.
The shooting took place after 10 PM on Saturday night in Monterey Park where the Chinese Lunar New Year Celebration was on. Visuals posted on social media showed victims being transported to the hospital in Monterey Park, California. Several footages showed emergency staff treating casualties on the scene, while police guarded the cordoned-off streets.
Monterey Park, which is a city is about 11 Kilometers from downtown Los Angeles. The city is home to near about 60,000 people with a fair section of the Asian population, officials so far have not provided any information related to the mass shooting that has claimed numerous lives.
A local street vendor, Seung Won Choi, who owns the Clam House seafood barbecue restaurant across the street from where the shooting happened, in conversation with local media, said that three people rushed into his business and told him to lock the door.
Choi was informed by the people who barged into his restaurant that there was a shooter with a machine gun who had multiple rounds of ammunition on him who came in with the intention of wreaking huge havoc at the event. Not sure about the shooting, Choi was quoted by a news wire that “the shooting took place at a dance club.”
