Ludhiana: Shena Aggarwal, a 2012-batch IAS officer of Punjab cadre, has been appointed as the new Ludhiana Municipal Commissioner.  She earlier served as Additional Commissioner of the Ludhiana MC in 2015, and also as the district’s Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) in 2019.

Talking about her first Impression of the Ludhiana city she says: "Ludhiana is the biggest city in Punjab. A lot of work has been done but a lot more is required for the development of the city. As Municipal  Commissioner I would endeavour to tackle major issues of the  city and contribute to the development of the community at large."

According to you what are the major issues in Ludhiana city?

The Commissioner said sanitation, solid waste management, and upskilling Budha Nullah, would be the major issues. A lot of work is going in this direction.

Monsoon has always been a troublesome affair in the city. What is your plan of action in this regard?

This is closely related to sewerage and waste management problems in the city. Everyone should be informed about the concept of dry and wet waste management.

Capacity augmentation of projects such as sewerage treatment plants and Buddha Nullah is going on to deal with future monsoons. Regular cleaning of sewerage pipelines to avoid blockage in the city is the way forward.

There is a huge rise in the construction of illegal buildings in Ludhiana. Do you have any plans of action?

I think our first approach towards this issue would be no new construction of illegal buildings. Followed by the compounding of such buildings which are found to be illegal.

Lastly, if there is no option left for compounding then we would seal or demolish all those buildings.
