Mahashivratri 2022: Pooja Vidhi, Pooja Muhurata and things not to do on this day

Mahashivaratri is a Hindu festival celebrated annually in honour of the god Shiva. The name also refers to the night when Lord Shiva performs the heavenly dance.

It is a major festival in Hinduism, and this festival is solemn and marks a remembrance of "overcoming darkness and ignorance" in life and the world. It is observed by remembering Lord Shiva and chanting prayers, fasting, and meditating on ethics and virtues such as honesty, non-injury to others, charity, forgiveness, and the discovery of Lord Shiva.

  • On this day, people apply sandal tilak on the Shivling and bathe the Shivling with Panchamrit.
  • They light a lamp and camphor.
  • While worshiping Lord Shiva and Parvati, chant the mantra 'Om Namah Shivaya'.
  • Offer ‘bel patra’, ‘dhatura’, ‘aak patra’ and flowers to Lord Shiva.
  • In Prasad, offer dry fruits, fruits, dried coconut and kheer.

Mahashivratri will be from 3:16 am on 1st March to 10:00 am on 2nd March. At the same time, the first Muhurta for worship is from 11:47 to 12:34 in the morning and from 6:21 to 9:27 in the evening. You can worship Lord Shiva at any time without these Muhurta.
 
 
Things not to do on Mahashivratri
  • Devotees should refrain from being dressed in black on this day as it is said Lord Shiva is not very fond of the colour.
  • Ketki and Kevada Flower should be avoided as it is said that flower is cursed and despised by Lord Shiva.
  • Tulsi Leaves should be avoided during Lord Shiva’s pooja as it is a symbol for Goddess Laxmi, wife of Vishnu.
  •  Don’t take complete one full circle around the Shiva Linga.
  • Damaged leaves must not be offered during prayer.
  • Don’t offer milk to Lord Shiva using a bronze container.
