US based Artificial Intelligence Research Organization OpenAl has issued statements regarding its AI program that make it apparent that AI cannot be used for Lok Sabha election campaign in India. It is necessary to conduct elections on a fair basis. OpenAI said on Monday that the company will ensure that its technology is not used to undermine the democratic electoral process. The company will implement some tools to stop deep-fake videos, photos and fake news.

San Francisco-based OpenAI is a private research lab that develops artificial intelligence. It was founded as a non-profit organization in 2015 by Altman, Elon Musk (who is no longer on OpenAl's board), and others.

What is AI?

AI means Artificial Intelligence. A machine that is intelligent, can analyze data on its own, can talk, speak and understand languages. Can find answers to difficult questions and can complete the given work. Here’s all the ways AI can morph the truth and therefore spread fake news like wildfire:

  • Privacy – The voice recognition AI program in smartphones can understand every conversation made on e-mail and call.
  • Security - Countries selling advanced technology to the world can become a threat to weaker countries by becoming strong in AI.
  • Threat to truth – AI can pose a threat to truth by writing fake reviews and false articles on e-commerce and websites.
  • Unemployment – In the initial phase of AI, jobs have started being lost in many sectors. This may increase unemployment.
  • Racism – Evidence was found of AI discriminating against people based on their colour. This technology can increase hatred due to the input it receives.
  • Terrorism - The interference of terrorists on the Internet is increasing. The danger will increase if AI falls into the wrong hands.

How can AI’s influence be contained?

There are some counter measures that will be introduced by OpenAI to ensure that the sanctity of the democratic process will be maintained:

The chatbot will give citations to its information:

OpenAI says that users will be able to get real-time information through ChatGPT. The chatbot will also attach links to where it has taken the information. Currently ChatGPT does not have this feature. The company is in talks with several media organizations including CNN, Fox News, Time and Bloomberg to use their content. The company has already signed agreements with Axel Springer SE and Associated Press.

AI generated pictures will be flagged:

OpenAI said that they are going to bring such a tool which will help in identifying AI generated images. For this the company will start encoding the photos. With this, users will be able to get information about the person who created the photo and the time it was created. People will also be able to determine whether a picture is real or it has been prepared with the help of a computer. It will be provided to media institutions first.

CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, said that AI will increase productivity 100 times but creativity will not increase. The creator of AI chatbot 'Chat GPT', says - Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the most transformative technology discovered in science till date. It is giving birth to new opportunities. AI can do 100 times more work than humans, but will never be able to surpass human intelligence and creativity.
