7 killed, 70 injured in massive IED explosion in madrassa at Peshawar

The madrassa is especially for the adult students and many were studying when the blast happened.

A powerful explosion at a seminary (madrassa) in Peshawar, Pakistan has killed at least seven people while 70 sustained severe injuries. Reportedly, the explosion at a madrassa has rocked the Dir Colony of Peshawar.

According to the reports, "The blast took place in a madrassa on Tuesday where unknown people had planted explosives in a plastic bag," a police officer said to the media house. The blast has claimed the lives of children also, he added.

The madrassa is especially for the adult students and many were studying when the blast happened. 

A spokesman for the Lady Reading Hospital nearby said it had received seven dead and 70 wounded patients. There are many with burns suffered in the blast.

"Four of the dead were children," said Tariq Burki, the director of the hospital.

However, as per the senior police officials, improvised explosive devices (IED) were used to trigger the explosion and five kgs of explosives were used for the blast on Tuesday. 

"The blast took place in a seminary during a Quran class. Someone took a bag inside the seminary," Waqar Azim, a senior police official, was quoted saying to AFP. 

Notably, the madrassa is especially for the adult students and many were studying when the blast happened.
