Chennai: On the occasion of the birth centenary, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palniswami and Deputy Chief Miniseter O Panneeselvam led the State in paying rich tributes to the founder of the AIADMK and late CM Bharat Ratna MGR.

Mr Palaniswami and Mr Panneerselvam, accompanied by party MLAs and Ministers, garlanded the state of MGR at the Dr MGR Medical University campus in Guindy and also paid floral tributes to a decorated portrait of the late leader.

A special commemorative coin with the image of MGR was also released on the occasion.

On 9th January, the Madras High Court had cleared the decks for unveiling the commemorative arch constructed across Kamarajar Salaiwith a rider that no ceremony should be conducted for the event.

A Division Bench of Justices M Sathyanarayanan and P Rajamanickam modified their November 19, 2018 order banning inauguration of the arch and said the arch could be unveiled either on MGR's birth anniversary or any other day without any pomp.
