The GST Council will, today, meet to discuss the indications made by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi amid the expectations of moving the non-luxury items from 28% slab to the 18%.

However, it seems to be very unlikely as the consensus between the GST council and the states given the recent Assembly elections win by the Congress in Rajasthan, Chhatisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.

Earlier in the week, Modi had hoped to bring ’99 percent’ of the non-luxury items under the 18% slab of the GST.

"Today, the GST system has been established to a large extent and we are working towards a position where 99 per cent things will attract the sub-18 per cent GST slab," Modi said.

Some discussions on the reduction of cess on the plug-in hybrid cars are also expected in the meeting.

If implemented, the Modi government would certainly get a lot of the middle class vote in the upcoming 2019 elections.
