NIT Rourkela gets a new building, Edu Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal inaugurates it online

A Telescope will be installed on the top of the building, and there will be provisions for the department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Physics and Astronomy to make observations.

Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal inaugurated the newly built Golden Jubilee Building of NIT Rourkela, Odisha today through a virtual platform. 

Addressing the event, the Minister said that NIT Rourkela is a premier institution of our country and has been producing the best brains for the country and has brought many accolades also. 


NIT Rourkela building important to implement NEP

The new building constructed at NIT Rourkela is a symbol of the university’s prestige. Pokhriyal said that institutions like NIT Rourkela have a very important role to play in the implementation of the New Educational Policies (NEP).

Pokhriyal also added that as it is one of the tallest buildings around, it enlarges the glory of Rourkela city. The magnificent structure of the building is indeed metaphorically and geographically, 'the heart of NIT Rourkela', added Pokhriyal.

Mr Ramesh Pokriyal also highlighted that the vision of having this building is to achieve and fulfil one of the essential mottos of the Institute to enhance efficiency in the administrative functioning and combine technology with this process to make it more people and students friendly. 


The architecture of NIT Rourkela building

The approximate cost of constructing the new NIT Rourkela building has been Rs 95 crores and is entirely funded by the Ministry of Education, Govt. of India.

The building is constructed at a stretch of 7000 sqm of the area and is located centrally, at an equal distance from every department. The building consists of one block with seven floors and a tower block of 14 floors. 


Benefits of NIT Rourkela building

He added this SMART building will add to the campus's grandness, perfectly capturing the spirit of excellence and dedication which has been the principle philosophy of the Institute since its inception.  

The building will resemble a world-class conference centre, and there will be a library spread over two floors separated by a mezzanine.

The building is well equipped with fire sensors and automatic water sprinklers for any emergency. According to the current plan, the offices like Academic Section, Examination Section, Establishment Section, Finance Section, Purchase, and Internal Audit, Alumni and International Relations, Sponsored Research, Industrial Consultancy, and Continuing Education Cell would be shifted to this building. This building will also have the Director's office, Deans' offices, Registrar's office, Board Room, and Senate Hall, among others.

The building will have a Telescope installed on the top, and there will be provisions for the department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Physics, and Astronomy to make observations regarding the climate and solar system.

The building’s basement will have a Center of Excellence, 12 states of the art laboratories for modern institutional requirements that will provide the needs of skill development and conduct training.
