Marking a silver lining over the country’s growth on the economic front, the newly released data from the National Statistical Office showed remarkable growth in India’s urban employment rate for the April-June quarter 7.6% a straight 5% difference from last year’s corresponding quarter which stood at 12.6%.

India's urban unemployment rate improved across genders and age groups to its best-ever level in the quarter ending June 2022.

India's urban unemployment rate was 7.6% in the quarter ending June, compared to 8.2% in the quarter ending March, 12.7% in the June quarter of 2021-22, and 8.9% in the June quarter of 2019-20.

Joblessness across the country was high in April-June 2021 due to the lethal impact of COVID-related restrictions in the country.

The data presented in the 15th Periodic Labor Force Survey (PLFS) showed the unemployment rate among females (aged 15 years and above) declined to 9.5% at par with 14.3% a year ago. The same rate among women in the previous quarter stood at 10.01%.

Whereas, among men, the rate of joblessness dipped to 7.1% against 12.2% a year back, which was 7.7% in the previous quarter of this year.

Another factor that marks an improvement on the unemployment front was that the figure launched for the quarter ending June was the lowest since the corresponding quarter of 2018.

On the other hand, the current data by NSO also revealed that the labor force participation rate (LFPR) which is the section of the population working or seeking work in the first quarter of the current fiscal was recorded as the best since 2018-2019.

The industry-wise breakup in the current fiscal also showed that the employment prospect has improved. The share of workers in agriculture, the secondary sector (which includes sectors like manufacturing and mining), and the tertiary sector (comprises services) was 5.7%, 34%, and 60.3%, respectively.

Share in the tertiary sector was similarly higher 62% in fiscal 2019-20, a clear sign that people are seeking and finding jobs with the pandemic under control, the report stated.

The Labour force refers to that part of the population that supplies or offers labor in the industry for the continuance of economic activities that involves the production of goods and services, which comprises employed and unemployed as well.

The NSO launched PLFS in April 2017. On the basis of this PLFS, a quarterly bulletin is released giving estimates of the labor force indicators which include unemployment rate, worker population ratio (WPR), labour force participation rate (LFPR), distribution of workers by broad status in employment, and industry of work.
