The book was written by Piper Kerman and in it, she expressed her own story which she faced while she was lodged in an American jail. Now, the question arises why Piper Kerman was jailed. The answer is quite interesting. As per reports, after her college life, Piper Kerman fell in love with a woman who was caught in international drug trafficking. In her book, Piper Kerman called the woman 'Nora' while in the Netflix series, the woman is named Alex who was played by Laura Prepon. Piper Kerman smuggled $10,000 from Chicago to Brussels, Belgium during her relationship with Nora. As a result, 10 years later she was caught by the security agencies which ultimately landed her in jail. She ended up in prison for 15 months on charges of felonious money-laundering activities in 1988, however, she only served for 13 months. Kerman served her sentence at FCI Danbury, a minimum security prison located in Danbury, Connecticut.

When Kerman published her book it was well received as it had outlined the dismal condition of women in prison. After Netflix adopted her book to make a series, Kerman went on to become vocal against the worsening conditions of jail especially for women based on her own experience. Now, coming to the main question of where is she now, a report suggests that currently Piper Kerman works as a communication strategist for non-profit organizations. She married writer Larry Smith in 2016 and from then they both live in Columbus, Ohio. Not only this, she also teaches writing classes at the Marion Correctional Institution and the Ohio Reformatory for Women in nearby Marysville, Ohio. It is pertinent to mention here that in 2014, Kerman testified at a hearing on "Reassessing Solitary Confinement" before the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Human Rights
