There is a severe shortage of fuel being witnessed across the country due to the truck drivers’ strike in protest of the Hit and Run laws introduced by the Central Government. According to reports, nearly 45 percent of all fuel stations across the state have gone dry. The fuel in Punjab is mainly supplied from Sangrur, Bathinda and Jalandhar terminals. But due to the strike, no supplies have been received from these terminals.

Punjab Petrol Pump Association executive Aswinder Mongia informed that the situation is getting worse day by day and no supplies have been received for 3 days, since the protest started. According to Mongia, almost 40 to 45 percent of petrol station have gone dry in Punjab, and 75 percent could be depleted by the end of the day.

The truck drivers’ and transporters stepped out to protest against the hit and run laws introduced by the central government. According to the law, a driver could face 10 years imprisonment and a 7 lakh fine for causing a major accident. The drivers protest that the incidents are not deliberate and that the fine amount could never be paid on their salary. Hence the rule should be revised.
