After the Phagwara Sugar Mill failed to pay cane dues of Rs 72 crore yesterday, farmers blocked both sides of the national highway, creating a chaotic situation throughout the city.

Noticing the disturbance among the people and the problem, the farmers today opened the side of the National Highway from Jalandhar to Ludhiana and staged a sit-in on the National Highway Satnampura bridge on the side heading from Ludhiana to Jalandhar.

Manjit Singh Rai, president of Bhartiya Kisan Union Doaba, said that one side of the national highway has been opened due to the inconvenience faced by city residents and passers-by and those traveling from Ludhiana to Jalandhar can use the crossing service line of the bridge.
