Phagwara: Policeman Kamal Bajwa shot dead by gangsters, CM Mann announces ex-gratia to family

In an absolute shocker, a Police constable was shot dead during an encounter with gangsters in Phagwara town of Punjab. During the encounter, gangsters opened fire at the policemen chasing them after which one bullet hit Station City SHO Amandeep Nahar’s gunman Kamal Bajwa who was then taken to hospital but succumbed to injuries. As per information, 3 gangsters were also shot during this and are now in police custody.

Reportedly, gangsters were fleeing away after looting Creta vehicle from Phagwara when SHO’s gunman received information about the same. He started chasing them but was not aware of the availability of pistols with them. After gangsters got to know that the police are chasing them, they opened fire out of which one bullet hit Kamal Bajwa. He was then taken to Civil Hospital where he was declared dead.

The information about gangsters was then passed to Phillaur Police and police at the blockade has an encounter with gangsters. During this, three gangsters were hit by bullets and later got arrested. They were then taken to Civil Hospital, Phillaur but due to their condition being critical, doctors referred them to Jalandhar.

Investigation revealed that the vehicle was robbed from a person named Avtar Singh, a resident of Urban Estate Phagwara who was going home along with his friend. He stated that he was going to his place in Creta when gangsters surrounded his car and got him out of it at gunpoint. After the gangsters went away, he immediately informed the police after which the encounter took place.

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann also paid his heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased through a tweet. He further acknowledged him for his sacrifice and sense of responsibility towards the state. CM Mann also wrote that his family will receive Rs. 1 crore as ex-gratia while another Rs. 1 crore will be given by HDFC bank as money for insurance.

He said, “Salute to martyr Constable Kuldeep Singh Bajwa Belt no. 886/KPT who has made the sacrifice in line of duty. Punjab Government will make Ex Gratia grant of Rs 1 crore. Another Rs 1 crore insurance payment will be made by HDFC Bank. We stand with our martyrs and their families.”
