Pieces of Her: Most men in their 30s like to believe they know their parents well, from hearing memories of their childhood and professional milestones to their front lawn next door to hear themselves peeing.

But what if you found out three decades later that your mother had a life you had no idea about? This is what happens in Peace of Her which is based on the novel of the same name by Karin Slaughter.

The first episode opens with a mother and daughter enjoying lunch, with Laura Oliver (Colette) suggesting her aimlessly nearly 30-year-old daughter Andy (Bella Heathcote) visit a therapist and/or get a job gave.

They are interrupted by another mother/daughter duo, who is soon killed by a jilted ex-boyfriend, at which point Laura pulls off some pretty badass tricks to kill him, which puzzles Andy as Laura has to Just supposed to be an ordinary mom and not Jack Reacher.

However, Laura's background goes deeper than anyone can understand, and the trouble is that someone had her camera running when her hidden abilities come into play, and now she's going viral and Laura I don't want to go viral.

Unsurprisingly, Academy Award nominee Toni Collette gives a charming performance as the complicated Laura, proving once again that you can't go wrong with a play in her capable hands.

While the audience is first led to believe that Laura is your simple mild-mannered mom, Colette alludes to the character's harsh past when she incapacitates the restaurant's gunman with an effective cut to the neck. She's the kind of actress who can sell backstory with a look or shudder that many others can't. She presents herself more than the show around her, she knows what to do with.

Meanwhile, Heathcote, best known for his roles in Dark Shadows and The Man in the High Castle, is equally influential as Andy – a 911 operator who moved home several years ago to care for his ailing mother. She was gone and felt worthless after doing nothing during dinner to shoot. These two Australian actresses do an excellent job playing a mother and daughter who face many challenges in their relationship.

But there is also a lot of affection. Their relationship is strained when Andy (Bella Heathcote) learns that she doesn't know who her mother is. Or, more specifically, her mother's background and her secrets.

To be honest, for me the first episode sets the tone for the entire series. It introduces all the lead actors, there is a lot of action, a lot of questions are asked, and the viewer wants to know more about this developing drama. Looks like this is a thrilling thriller that everyone will be talking about, which is a very lucrative Netflix offering.
