In a proud moment for India, a teacher by profession Piyali Basak from Chandhannagar in Hooghly district created history by climbing Mount Everest without any supplemental oxygen. Bengal climber Piyali Basak was the first woman to climb Mt. Dhaulagiri last October without supplemental oxygen; and, within seven months, she has added another feather to her cap by climbing Mount Everest.

Bengali girl Piyali Basak Mount Everest conquering report has sent the people of West Bengal and India into a frenzy. However, Piyali Basak Mount Everest story was not an easy one. Reportedly, Piyali came from a humble background and faced economical hardship in pursuit of her dream to climb the mountains. Reports suggest that Piyali had mortgaged her house and even used her entire saving, however, was only able to collect Rs 18 lakhs. Notably, a climber needs at least Rs 35 lakh to climb Mount Everest. 

Notably, Piyali had also appealed for crowdfunding through her Facebook after the Nepal government made it mandatory to pay the full amount in advance before climbing Mount Everest. Piyali raised Rs 5 lakh from crowd-funding, however, she still lacked Rs 12 lakhs. However an agency covered her and as a result, Piyali was finally able to climb Mount Everest. Notably, in 2019, due to bad weather conditions, she had to return without climbing Everest.
