Plastic surgery icon, Sunanda Mitra dies

Mitra retired after 28 years of teaching from PGI in 2000

Sunanda Mitra, one of the icons of plastic surgery in India passes away battling Parkinsonism and Diabetic dementia on Monday.

Mitra took birth at Madha, near Nasik on April 28, 1939. After her primary school education in Kolhapur, she joined BL Medical College in Pune in 1956.

She later went to England and got training at Royal Victoria Infirmary and Hospital for Sick Children. She joined PGI as a lecturer in plastic surgery in 1972 and retired after 28 years of teaching in 2000.

She is survived by her husband and their two children.
