PM Modi becomes most followed active politician on Twitter after the site permanently suspended Trump’s account

Currently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has 64.7 million followers, while US President Donald Trump had 88.7 million followers before the suspension of his account.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become the most followed active politician on Twitter after the micro-blogging platform permanently suspended US President Donald Trump account after hundreds of Trump supporters attacked the US Capitol Hill building, on late Wednesday evening breaking barricades, that led to killing 4 people and one police officer. 

Donald Trump had 88.7 million followers before the suspension of his account, while PM Modi presently is followed by 64.7 million people on Twitter. 


However, former US President Barack Obama remains the most followed politician on Twitter with 127.9 million followers. US President-elect Joe Biden has 23.3 million followers. 

When it comes to other Indian leaders, Union home minister Amit Shah has 24.2 million followers and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal 21.2 million followers.

Two days after the Capitol Hill riots initiated by Trump supporters Twitter permanently suspended Trump's account on Friday due to the "risk of further incitement of violence".

Twitter in a tweet said, "After a close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence.”

  

The microblogging site has also taken stern action against Trump’s former national security adviser Michael Flynn, attorney Lin Wood and attorney Sidney Powell and banned their accounts citing that it will scrutinize accounts that have a potential to cause harm offline.

"Given the renewed potential for violence surrounding this type of behaviour in the coming days, we will permanently suspend accounts that are solely dedicated to sharing QAnon content," Twitter said in an emailed statement.

  

The company said that when it determines a group or campaign is engaged in "coordinated harmful activity", it may suspend accounts that it finds primarily encourages that behaviour.
