Another potential long weekend is loading in Punjab and Chandigarh. Punjab, as well as Chandigarh, observes May 30 as a Public Holiday. Public Holiday on May 30 is observed on the occasion of the martyrdom day of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji. While Punjab had already included this date in its official list of gazetted holidays for the year, the Chandigarh Administration recently issued a formal notification confirming the same.
On this day, all government offices, schools, colleges, and other educational institutions across Punjab and Chandigarh will remain closed. The holiday honors the supreme sacrifice of the fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjan Dev Ji, who is remembered for his martyrdom in the face of tyranny and his unwavering faith.
Long Weekend loading in Punjab
Interestingly, while all schools and colleges will remain closed on Friday, they will reopen on Saturday. However, following the public holiday on Friday, May 31, falls on a Saturday, when most government institutions typically remain closed, and June 1 is a Sunday.
This creates a three-day long weekend, offering an ideal opportunity for families to plan short trips or observe the spiritual significance of the occasion. Additionally, summer vacations for schoolchildren are also set to begin from June 1, making the extended weekend even more convenient for travel and family gatherings
Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains recently announced summer vacations for all schools in the state from June 2 to June 30.
