A short video clip surfaced which showed Punjab Ex-Chief Minister Charanjit Channi touching the former chief of the SGPC Bibi Jagir Kaur’s chin after bowing to her at the district administration complex. The video was made viral by the Congress candidate for the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat’s opposition leaders. However, Channi gave his clarification on Saturday, saying that he treated Bibi like his elder sister and his gesture was out of affection and respect.
In the viral clip, Channi bowed to Bibi Jagir Kaur and touched her hands with his forehead. In a very brief exchange, the former CM of Punjab later touched her chin. A trimmed video clip, in which Channi touched Bibi’s chin, went viral on social media. Later, Vikramjit Chaudhary, another Congress MLA who is against Channi, issued a statement terming Channi’s behaviour as “disrespectful” and urged the Akal Takht jathedar to summon him.
However, Channi gave his statement on Saturday saying that, “For years I have been treating Bibi Jagir Kaur like my elder sister, like my mother and that is why I bowed before her so respectfully. I touched her chin as we do with our sister or mother.”
