News from Tarn Taran has come as a shocker for everyone in Punjab as a 26-year-old youth suffered a heart attack and lost his life because of drug overdose. The problem of drug abuse is not news in Punjab. The videos and incidents of drug addiction, drug trade, etc surfacing from different cities of the state have made the locals believe that Punjab has become the drug epicenter.

Reportedly, within 15 days 4 youths have lost their lives due to drug overdose. Although the government is carrying out search operations to curb the activities there seems to be no end to the same.

The first incident was reported on October 3 when a 20-year-old youth was found dead in the government school of Talwandi Sabo in Bathinda. The deceased was identified as Manpreet Singh who died to due drug overdose. An injected syringe was found along with the body of the deceased in the school.

Not even three days passed that another incident was reported from Nabha town of Patiala where an 18-year-old boy named Gurbakshish Singh died. It was alleged that the boy lost his life because of drug overdose. He was the only son of his parents.

The third incident reported is of Tarn Taran district where a youth named Mahakdeep Singh who was just 18 years old allegedly died due to an overdose of drugs. The deceased’s family broke down during the funeral and said that the problem of drug addiction exists in every house in Punjab.

The deaths that have taken place raise a big question about the availability of drugs in Punjab and no action is being taken to stop this. Many opposition leaders held the Punjab CM responsible for the same saying that instead of focusing on the Gujarat election, he must take interest in the activities taking place in the state. Another startling fact is that all the deceased were very young which shows that the youth of Punjab has fallen onto the wrong path.

There is no doubt that the police administration is doing its best to keep a check on drug usage but the formation of rigid and strict strategies is necessary to control the problem of drug addiction.
