In a surprise announcement, Banwarilal Purohit resigned from his post as Governor of Punjab on February 2. However, information has come to the fore as per sources that the Governor was in a meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah just a day prior on February 1. In his letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, he cited “personal reasons and other commitments” as the cause of resignation. His sudden resignation has caused speculation among the media, especially with the Lok Sabha elections just around the corner.

The sudden resignation was a surprise that no one saw coming. However as per our sources, it is likely that BJP could be looking to nominate Purohit as a candidate for Rajya Sabha MP from Rajasthan’s constituency. Sources also reveal that the government is likely looking for other options for the post of Governor. It also came to the fore that the Governor had held a meeting with Amit Shah, which could also be a factor behind the sudden resignation, according to our sources.

In August 2021, he took oath as the 36th Governor of Punjab. Then Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court Justice Ravi Shankar Jha had administered the oath of office to Banwarilal Purohit at the Punjab Raj Bhawan. Banwarilal Purohit was also in the headlines due to his tussle with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. It is important to note that Banwarilal Purohit has been a Lok Sabha MP three times before and has also been the managing editor of 'The Hitavada', the oldest English daily newspaper of Central India.
