Amidst crackdown on corruption, Punjab Vigilance Bureau Chief Varinder Kumar becomes victim of cybercrime

There are many cases of cybercrime registered on the daily basis in Punjab, but it’s shocking to hear that higher officials of different departments are also becoming a victim of the same.

The latest case of IPS Varinder Kumar, Vigilance Bureau Chief becoming a victim of cybercrime has come to the fore.

What happened is that today, Rahul S, Director of Vigilance Bureau received a message from a fake number that portrayed itself as the contact of IPS Varinder Kumar and had also put a DP of him. Rahul S received a message where he was ordered by a fake contact to buy 10 gift coupons worth Rs. 10,000 and send them to him within one hour.

He felt a bit weird after receiving the message and inquired about the same with Varinder Kumar. After inquiry, it came to the fore that a fake number is sending these messages impersonating Varinder Kumar.

Post this, the whole information was provided to IG Cyber Crime, RK Jaiswal after which an FIR has been lodged against the same and the WhatsApp number has also been mentioned in the FIR. Cybercrime is now making sure to find the culprit through the IP address and know the motive behind doing so.

For the last few months, the Vigilance Bureau has been working very actively and Varinder Kumar is known to be one of the most efficient officers of the department.

It is still to be deciphered whether he has become a victim of cybercrime or is this any conspiracy to defame him? The cybercrime cell has assured to find the culprit as soon as possible.
