Punjab Weather Today: Jalandhar & other districts put on thunderstorm with gusty wind alert

The IMD Chandigarh has already predicted 5 days of thunderstorms in multiple districts of Punjab and has issued various districts an orange and yellow alert until June 2, 2025.

Multiple districts of Punjab woke up to alert messages by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) warning them about thunderstorms along with gusty winds. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) of Chandigarh unit also issued an alert warning residents about thunderstorms today in Punjab. The IMD Chandigarh has already predicted 5 days of thunderstorms in multiple districts of Punjab and has issued an orange and yellow alert until June 2, 2025.

IMD Chandigarh first issued a thunderstorm alert at 2:42 am. IMD alert reads, "Moderate Thunderstorm (wind speed 40- 60 KMph) with Lightning very likely over parts of Moga, Faridkot, Firozepur, Jalandhar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Amritsar, Gurdaspur. The alert was valid until 5:42 am.

IMD Chandigarh then issued a second alert at 4:36 am. IMD Chandigarh alert reads, "Moderate Thunderstorm (wind speed 40- 60 KMph) with Lightning  very likely over parts of Mansa, Sangrur, Barnala, Patiala, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, SBS Nagar, Rupnagar, Hoshiarpur." IMD clarified that the alert is valid until 7:36 am. 

Notably, last Saturday, Jalandhar and many other districts experienced a strong thunderstorm. The thunderstorm was so strong that many trees were uprooted, and even iron poles fell in Jalandhar. Multiple deaths were also reported in multiple districts of Punjab. Furthermore, many areas of Jalandhar remained without electricity for many hours. 

Keeping this in mind, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) also issued alerts and sent text messages to residents at the same time, and IMD Chandigarh issued alerts. The alerts were issued by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) based on information from the Punjab State Disaster Management Authority (PSDMA). According to the messages, districts including Amritsar, Bathinda, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Mansa, Pathankot, and Tarn Taran are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds with speeds ranging between 50–60 km/h. In case of emergencies, citizens are advised to call the PSDMA emergency helpline at 112.

Later, around 8:00 AM, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a fresh forecast predicting lightning and winds (40–50 km/h) for Patiala, Mohali, and Chandigarh, with an active alert in place until 10:25 AM.

According to the IMD, rainfall is expected today across multiple districts including Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Sangrur, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar, Mohali (SAS Nagar), Fatehgarh Sahib, Patiala, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Firozpur, Moga, Faridkot, Bathinda, Mansa, Barnala, Fazilka, and Muktsar.

An Orange Alert has been issued for Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Sangrur, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar, Mohali, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Patiala, while a Yellow Alert is in place for Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Firozpur, Moga, Faridkot, Bathinda, Mansa, and Barnala.
