The India Meteorological Department (IMD) of the Chandigarh unit has been predicting rainfall in Punjab for the past many days. IMD had predicted that Punjab would be hit by monsoon 8 days early, i.e., between June 22 and June 23. It had also predicted that multiple districts of Punjab would witness heavy rainfall as the monsoon would intensify on June 23, 2025. Now, the date has already passed, and Punjab has witnessed only isolated rainfall in a few districts of the state. In fact, many weather apps and AccuWeather have predicted rainfall in Punjab, but the state is still waiting for heavy showers.
Now, the question arises why Punjab is not receiving rainfall despite repeated IMD predictions? Below is what we know so far-
Despite repeated IMD's alerts, monsoon activity has slowed down not only in Punjab but also in Himachal Pradesh. As per reports, Punjab typically receives monsoon rain from the southwest monsoon winds. If these currents are weak or delayed, due to changes in the Arabian Sea or Bay of Bengal systems, expected rainfall may not materialize.
As per the weather department, monsoon entered Punjab 48 hours ago, and since then, it has been stuck in Pathankot. There is little chance of its movement even on Tuesday. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert regarding rain in 5 districts of Punjab today. All five districts are adjacent to Himachal Pradesh.
Earlier on Monday, 0.4 mm of rain was recorded in Ludhiana and 0.5 mm in Ropar, Punjab. While no rain was reported in the rest of Punjab. Due to this, an increase of 1.8 degrees Celsius has been recorded in the average maximum temperature in the state. However, the temperature still remains close to normal. The highest temperature recorded in the state today was 42.5 ° C, which was recorded in Bathinda.
Talking about Himachal Pradesh, reports suggest that the monsoon entered parts of Shimla, Sirmaur, Kangra, and Kinnaur districts on June 20 and has now reached nearly 90 percent of the state. However, due to its slowed pace, the monsoon is expected to advance into areas like Baddi in Solan, the Punjab-bordering regions of Una, and Paonta Sahib by this evening.
