In an unusual development, a village in Punjab's Mohali has given an ultimatum to migrants & labourers from Uttar Pradesh & Bihar to vacate the place in the next 15 to 20 days. Yes! you heard it right. As per reports, Mundo Sangtia Panchayat of Kurali village in Mohali has passed a controversial resolution. Mohali's village resolution orders have been given to the migrants living in the village to leave the village. According to the proposal, no person will give a place to live to the migrants. Not only this, but in the future also the identity card of any migrant will not be made in the village. Also, the migrants will not be allowed to live on rent in the village.
As per reports, 5 migrant families live on rent in the village which includes about 15 to 20 people. The population of the village is about 1,500, out of which 50 are migrants - most of them are from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan. At least 30 people have been living in the village for more than 10 years and even their Aadhaar and voter cards are registered at this address.
Regarding this matter, the villagers say that due to the alleged presence of migrants, criminal and anti-social activities are increasing in the area. This is having a bad effect on the coming generations. Due to this, this decision has been taken. Village member Manjit Singh was quoted saying that the unanimous decision to pass the proposal was prompted by incidents involving a migrant woman’s misconduct and various anti-social activities attributed to many migrants in the village.
Talking about the migrant population in Punjab, a survey was conducted by the Parvasi wing of the SAD-BJP government in 2016 and the estimated population of migrants at that time was 39 lakh. Over the years, this has increased to nearly 43 lakh. The numbers may differ at present as the survey was conducted in 2016.
