Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will hold talks with the protesting farmers today to try resolving the massive demonstration near Delhi against the agricultural laws.

Agriculture Minister Narendra Tomar, though not chief negotiator, will be present during the discussions.

According to sources, the government is likely to reassert that the three laws will not be taken back, however, it will reassure farmers on Minimum Support Price (MSP) and government markets or mandis.

Thousands of farmers across India are dreadful about the new farm laws enacted in September, alleging that it will deprive them of guaranteed minimum prices for their crops and that government markets or mandis will be scrapped, taking away their assured earning.

Though the Center says farmers fears are baseless and they will be supported at every level. Chief Ministers of BJP-ruled states are likely to support the government's assertions by explaining how these changes have worked well on improving the agricultural sector on the ground level.

The core demand of the farmers - repealing of the farm new laws - will not be granted, but talks are likely to take place and the government may offer to form a committee to take the negotiations forward.

On Monday, several union ministers and BJP leaders asked farmers to drop "misconceptions" about the farmer laws, asserting that they had nothing to do with the mechanism of MSP and ''mandis'', which would continue, along with the government's purchase of grains.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had accused the opposition of misleading farmers on the bills, guaranteeing his support to the farmers.

"The farmers are being deceived on these historic agriculture reform laws by the same people who have misled them for decades," he said.

Modi said farmers are free to follow the old trading system of “mandis'' where they can get the MSP. But assured that the three new laws would give them new options to sell for more.

Several opposition parties have come in support of the farmers alleging the ruling party that it is spreading lies and taking the rights of the farmers.
