Rajya Sabha Election 2022: List of members who are going to retire & nominated candidates

The trumpet of Rajya Sabha elections 2022 has been blown after the announcement of the results of assembly elections 2022 of 5 states. With BJP sweeping four out of five assembly elections, the saffron party is looking to bolster its quantum of members in the Rajya Sabha. On the other hand, the opposition parties are also looking to shoot up their quantum of members in the Rajya Sabha 2022 elections. 13 Rajya Sabha seats will be up for the political parties to grab as biennial elections to the Upper House will be held in March and June. 

It is pertinent to mention here that the tenure of 13 members of the Rajya Sabha will be up this year, on April 2. The voting for these 13 Rajya Sabha seats across six states is scheduled to be held on March 31. Therefore, the major political parties have started nominating their candidates for the biennial election to the Rajya Sabha. 

Rajya Sabha a permanent House and is not subject to dissolution.  As per Rajya Sabha's official website, one-third Members of Rajya Sabha (Upper House) retire after every second year.  The election is held to fill a vacancy arising otherwise than by retirement of a member on the expiration of his term of office is called ‘Bye-election'.

Coming back to the list of retiring candidates, there are 13 members of the Rajya Sabha who will be retiring this year on April 2. These include three seats from Kerala, two from Assam, one from Himachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Tripura each, and five seats in Punjab. 

Those who will be retiring as Rajya Sabha members are Ranee Narah and Ripun Bora from Assam, Anand Sharma from Himachal Pradesh, A. K. Antony, M. V. Shreyams Kumar and Somaprasad K from Kerala, K. G. Kenye from Nagaland, Jharna Das from Tripura, Sukhdev Singh, Partap Singh Bajwa, Shwait Malik, Naresh Gujral and Shamsher Singh Dullo from Punjab.
