Rajya Sabha Elections: Addition of 9 members makes BJP leading party in Upper House

The gap between the BJP and Congress is also at its widest ever.

In By-polls of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand in Rajya Sabha, all 11 candidates elected unopposed have changed the equation of the upper house. The BJP has reached its peak in the history of Rajya Sabha and Congress at the lowest level. 

By adding eight seats from UP and one seat from Uttarakhand, BJP has a total of 92 seats in the house, while the Congress has only 38 seats. The gap between the BJP and Congress is also at its widest ever. 9 members of BJP, 1 of BSP, and 1 of SP were elected on Monday. 

At present, the BJP is the single largest party in the upper house and along with its allies in the ruling NDA, the combined strength is over 100.

Nine of BJP candidates were elected. Out of these eight from Uttar Pradesh and one from Uttarakhand were declared elected unopposed.

Naresh Bansal has been declared elected unopposed from Uttarakhand. Earlier, congress Raj Babbar represented this seat.

In UP, Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri, Neeraj Shekhar, Arun Singh, Geeta Shakya, Haridwar Dubey, Brij Lal, BL Verma, and Seema Dwivedi were elected to the upper house.

Samajwadi party’s (SP) Ram Gopal Yadav was re-elected and Ramji Gautam of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) was also elected.

The strength of BJP has increased to 92, while that of Congress and BSP’s have come down by two members each and while that of SP by four MP’s in Upper house.
