The Broken News S2 is an original story written by Mike Bartlett on two big Indian media houses going head to head over the government's Operation Umbrella which can be used to monitor dubious movements. Talking about real-life references or similarities in The Broken News Season 2, many fans have pointed on social media that the character of Dipankar Sanyal played by Jaideep Ahlawat resembles to famous News Anchor. The news anchor often comes under the scanner of social media for being pro-government or pro-BJP. Furthermore, Operation Umbrella is also somewhat similar to the Pegasus controversy.
For the unversed, Prime Minister Modi-led BJP government was accused of snooping through Israeli software Pegasus. Pegasus is a military-grade spyware which can surveil targets with the help of their phones. In 2021, it was reported that journalists, opposition leaders, government critics, and activists' phone numbers were on a list of presumed Pegasus targets. Forensic tests on various devices by Amnesty International’s Security Lab also revealed that some activists and journalists’ phones had the spyware active.
In response, the Supreme Court appointed a committee, which probed allegations of unauthorised use of Israeli NSO Group’s Pegasus software for surveillance.
