Is Criminal Code a true story?
The answer is yes. Criminal Code on Netflix is inspired by real crimes as suggested in the trailer. The series official synopsis says, "The Federal Police have a mission - and they will do everything to accomplish it. Inspired by real crimes, the new action police series Criminal Code tells the surprising story of federal police officers who use DNA traces to dismantle the world's largest bank robbery gang at the border of Brazil with Paraguay."
Although the makers did not reveal which robbery gang they were talking about, True Scoop News tried to dig into the 'worlds largest bank robbery gang'. As per Bloomberg, Criciuma was the largest armed robbery in Brazilian history, with 125 million reais ($23 million) stolen.
Since the story portrays the plot of Paraguay, the biggest robbery in Paraguay's history was in 2017. A military-style robbery of Prosegur's office occurred in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay's border town to Brazil, on April 24, 2017. The event has been termed 'the robbery of the century' and “mega-robbery” and is the “biggest heist in Paraguay's history". The robbers were thought to have taken between 8 million to US$40 million.
Criminal Code Storyline-
Criminal Code kicks off with a big heist at a fancy security company in Paraguay. In response, some hardworking federal agents from the Foz do Iguacu bureau start a super detailed investigation. They use fancy techniques like DNA analysis to uncover a bunch of criminal stuff happening in both Paraguay and Brazil.
