For the unversed, Runway 34 is the recreation of an incident that took place on August 18, 2015, at Cochin International Airport. In the early morning on August 18, the Jet Airways flight 9W 555 from Doha reached its destination at 5:45 AM. However, due to low visibility due to continuous rain, the flight was not allowed to land. During the flight’s arrival at Kochi airspace, the Jet Airways flight with 141 passengers and 8 crew members onboard had approx 4,844 kg of fuel left.

Notably, a formal investigation revealed that the plane had only 349 Kg of remaining fuel at the time of landing as opposed to the mandatory 1500 Kg. The  Jet Airways flight had attempted at least 7 attempts to land, however, was denied due to poor visibility.  After the last and final landing attempt in Kochi, Jet Airways had to then re-route the flight to Thiruvananthapuram also known as Trivandrum.

In the final attempt, 'May Day' was called by the pilot and the flight was crash-landed by him. However, in the end, no injuries were reported, and a formal investigation was made against the Airlines and the staff present during the incident. The inquiry resulted in the demotion of the captain to a co-pilot as he had risked the lives of over 150 people. It led to conflicting opinions as many hailed the pilot as a skilled hero, others called him careless.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) had rejected the claims of Runway 34 being based on a true story. The FIP had questioned the Runway 34 makers and marked their protest on the portrayal of the character of a Pilot.
