The Recruit Season 2 storyline in a nutshell

The Recruit Season 2 starts with Owen in a fight with Nichka who killed her mother Max in the previous season. However, the CIA security arrives at the spot courtesy of Owen's traceable watch and saves him. Owen then moves back to Washington DC where he is grounded but one day he receives another graymail with a code written on it. The code is nothing but the co-ordinate of a hotel in Seoul. As a result, Owen persuades his boss to let him go to Seoul to find out the truth and graymailer. He goes there another CIA Lawyer and there he meets Jang Kyun an NIS agent who was the graymailer.

Jang Kyun blackmails Owens and the CIA that if he does not receive help from them to find out about his kidnapped wife in Russia, he will release all the nasty secrets of American Intelligence. During the investigation, Owen comes to know about the dead man's switch and traceable cryptocurrency.

What is Dead Man Switch, shown in The Recruit Season 2?

Owen finds out that Jang Kyun's wife is kidnapped by Yakuza (Japanese mafia). The Yamazaki clan in eastern Russia is their territory."

Owne then asks, "How the Yakuza having her is your fault?" The NIS agent Jang Kyun then reveals, "Do you know the expression 'follow the money'? It's the heart of intelligence gathering but it's reactive and increasingly difficult. So we decided to create our own money to follow."

Owen then asked, "What cryptocurrency?"

The NIS agent said, "Yes. Digital money with a tracker hidden in the code. The only problem was how do we get terrorists and organised crime to start using it?"

Owen then asks, "Your wife's bribes?"

"Yes, I suggested using her NGO to inject crypto into the bloodstream of our enemies," added the NIS agent.

Owen then counter-questioned, "I thought that NGOs were off-limits to intelligence agencies as a cover."

The agent then said, "She did not know. I believed that the true nature of the crypto was undiscoverable. But, if the Yakuza found out and they traced it back to her NGO."

The agent then blackmailed Owen again after he refused to help him. He said, "I got 20 years of joint secrets hanging around your neck. The CIA created the traceable crypto with us (NIS)."

"The crypto that we have created together has gotten popular with civilians, which means your government is not only spying on the bad guys they are tracking ordinary Americans which means the CIA will do anything to keep that a secret," added the NIS agent.

Owen while going to Jang Kyun's apartment asks another CIA lawyer with whom he came, "How do I find his dead man's switch?" The CIA lawyer informs, "Its most likely digital. A release of secrets if he fails to check in or sends a coded message." To be precise, Jang Kyu’s “dead man switch” is a device of digital code that would release the CIA's crypto secret to the public
