A meeting of opposition parties was held in Delhi yesterday in which it is almost certain that there will be an alliance between Congress and Aam Aadmi Party for the upcoming 2024 elections. Regarding this, senior Congress leader and Congress MLA from Jalandhar Cantt, Pargat Singh said that he is not in favor as the alliance in Punjab is not a logical decision. “I am not in favor of this at all and my stand on this is clear” he said conclusively.

He claimed that although the he has no reservations regarding the alliance on a national level, it is an illogical decision in Punjab. He further explained that the people’s mandate in Punjab is that of opposition, hence they should compete against each other to respect democracy. BJP, statiscally the fourth most prominent party in Punjab, would compete against the first and second most prominent parties in Punjab. This goes against the spirit of democracy, he went on to say.

“Because the mandate given to us by the people of Punjab is that of opposition and if seen logically, BJP is the fourth party, and if the first and second parties contest the elections together then it is not in the spirit of democracy”, he said. It is similar in many other situations also that there is a local party and the Congress party which will contest the elections and whoever wins will definitely make its contribution to the India Alliance. Congress should not make any alliance in Punjab at all because it will cause loss to the party.

He further said that he accepts all the decisions of the command, but does not accept this. “If there is an alliance in Punjab then how will the seats be divided, I cannot say anything on this, the party chief can answer this” he further said.
