Ropar: Accused's family flees as tensions prevail after Sacrilege attempt at Gurdwara Sri Kotwali Sahib

On Monday, a man entered Gurdwara Sri Kotwali Sahib in Morinda and attacked the Granthis (Priests) and even tried to throw the Holy book of Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji.

Tensions have been prevailing in Ropar even since a sacrilege attempt was foiled at Gurdwara Sri Kotwali Sahib in Morinda, Punjab on Monday. For the unversed, on Monday, a man entered Gurdwara Sri Kotwali Sahib in Morinda and attacked the Granthis (Priests) and even tried to throw the Holy book of Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji. The entire incident was caught on CCTV, however, True Scoop News being a responsible media organization did not share the video in which a sacrilege attempt was seen. The man who attacked the Granthis and tried to desecrate the Holy book was nabbed by the people present in the Gurudwara and was later handed over to the Police. The Police in return launched an investigation into the case. However, on Tuesday, tense situations were witnessed in Ropar, and small-big markets were closed. As per reports, the accused's family had to flee the spot after their houses were attacked by raging people. Not only this, heavy forces were also deployed in the market area so that the law and order could be maintained. The name of the accused is Jasbir.

Furthermore, the Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities Sardar Iqbal Singh Lalpura also took cognizance of the case and asked for strict action against the accused. As per Sardar Iqbal Singh Lalpura, incidents of sacrilege can be avoided if strict punishment should be given to the accused and fair investigations in such types of cases are conducted. Not only this, but The National Commission for Minorities has asked the Chief Secretary of Punjab to list all the cases of sacrilege in Punjab in the last 45 years.It is pertinent to mention here that the Sikh Sangat (Community) are holding a protest outside the Police station and demanding strict action against the accused.

Notably, Punjab has witnessed multiple sacrilege incidents. In February this year, a man was caught desecrating Sri Gutka Sahib in Jalandhar. The incident took place near Professor Colony of the city. After getting the information, police registered a case against the accused and an investigation is underway. Reportedly, a person identified as Bablu was caught tearing up pages of the holy book and throwing them on the road in Professor Colony. While he was doing this, a man named Joga Singh stopped him from doing the same and called the people nearby for help. Post this, the accused tried to run away but was caught by the crowd and handed over to the police. Joga Singh alleged that the accused was drunk.
