Stringent rules are being enacted to prevent food wastage in China undergoing food crisis

China’s relations with many countries of the world have deteriorated in the past few months. Apart from the trade war against the US, China is continuing to escalate with India to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh. Countries like Britain, Australia, and Japan are also looking at China with suspicion. This has affected China’s import-export. The situation has worsened during the Corona epidemic. In such a situation China is going through a food crisis.

China’s food crisis can be understood from the fact that despite the stress on the LAC, China has decided to import rice from India. Now to counter this, China has made a new policy. People and restaurants will be fined for wasting food there. All this is being done under President Xi Jinping’s ‘Operation Empty Plate’, so that people are motivated to eat as much as they need.

Will not be able to order more dish than the number of people

According to the new policy, a group that eats food in a restaurant cannot order more dishes than its number of members. Under the new rules, a fine of up to 10 thousand Yuan (about 1.12 lakh rupees) can be imposed for leaving food in the plate. Restaurants will also be given the legal power to fine those who give up food.

China government wants to change the habit of wasting food

The Chinese government is also preparing a plan to ban activities that encourage over-eating. According to a report by the China Academy of Science, only in Beijing and Shanghai do people skip or throw away so much food every year, so that three to five crore people can be fed throughout the year. In the midst of the food crisis, the Chinese government wants to change this habit of wasting people.

Study claims: more than 500 million people overweight in China

The Jinping government is also worried about increasing obesity in the country. According to a study by China’s National Health Commission, more than 500 million people are overweight. That is, their weight is more than normal. In 2002 the obesity rate there was 7.1%. It increased to 16.4% in 2020. The report cited reduced physical activity as the reason for obesity.
