In a massive development, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia was arrested on Wednesday by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau from his residence in Green Avenue, Amritsar. The arrest comes as part of a statewide anti-drug crackdown, with 25 simultaneous raids conducted across Punjab, including nine in Amritsar alone. Vigilance Bureau senior official confirmed Bikram Majithia's arrest to True Scoop.
30 officers led by SSP Vigilance Amritsar Lakhbir Singh, reached Bikram Majithia's house early in the day. Bikram Majithia's wife and MLA Ganieve Kaur Majithia strongly objected to the raid, accusing officers of forcibly entering their home and using excessive force. The situation at Majithia's residence soon escalated. As news of the raid spread, Akali workers gathered outside the home, and some reportedly broke through the gates to enter the property in protest. Police have since heightened security around the house, sealing off access roads and erecting barricades.
In the meantime, reports suggest that Vigilance is now taking Majithia to Mohali.
Though no official statement has been released yet, it has been revealed that Majithia has been arrested in a disproportionate assets case. Vigilance is yet to issue its official statement.
