Supreme Court Hijab Verdict: SC Delivers Split Verdict On Pleas Against Karnataka Hijab Ban; Larger Bench To Hear Case

The apex court pronounced a split verdict on the controversial Karnataka Hijab incident on the petitions challenging the Karnataka High Court’s March 15 order which dismissed a batch of pleas filed by Muslim girls studying in colleges in Udupi seeking their right to wear Hijab in the classrooms.

While hearing the matter Supreme Court had reserved its verdict on September 22nd after going through extensive arguments from either side including the Karnataka state.

In view of a split verdict, the SC has directed that the appeals against the Karnataka High Court before the Chief Justice of India for constituting a larger bench.

Meanwhile, in a separate view of the divergent opinion on the case, matters will be placed before the CJI for appropriate directions.

During the hearing, Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia said Karnataka HC has not taken the correct path and found that wearing a hijab is ultimately a matter of an individual's choice, nothing more or less. Justice Dhulia has allowed the appeals and set aside the HC judgment.
