"How dare he say this?": SC issues contempt notice to Maharashtra Assembly Secretary, stays arrest of Arnab Goswami

The apex court also put a stay order on the arrest of Arnab Goswami in the breach of privilege motion case issued by the Maharashtra Assembly against him

In a massive development in the breach of privilege motion case of Arnab Goswami, the Supreme Court of India on Friday issued a contempt notice to the Secretary of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly for sending a letter to the Republic Chief for allegedly intimidating him to approach the apex court in breach of privilege motion case. 

The apex court also put a stay order on the arrest of Arnab Goswami in the breach of privilege motion case issued by the Maharashtra Assembly against him. 

Arnab Goswami had moved to Supreme Court to challenge the September 16 privilege motion sent to him by the Maharashtra Assembly for his criticism of the government inaction in the Sushant Singh Rajput case. 

The case was heard by a bench of  Chief Justice of India SA Bobde and Justices AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian.  Famous Advocate Harish Salve appearing for Arnab Goswami told that court that the Republic Chief got a letter from the Secretary who questioned him for producing the communications of the Speaker and the Privilege Committee before the Court as they are confidential in nature.

Expressing shock to the letter Chief Justice of India SA Bobde said, "How dare he say this, what is Article 32 for?"

"We have a serious question on the author of this letter and we find it extremely difficult to overlook this", the CJI added.

The Supreme Court order said, "We issue a notice to the Secretary of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, to show cause as to why contempt should not be issued against him in terms of Article 129 of the Constitution of India, returnable in 2 weeks".
