The Supreme Court has rejected a review plea filed by Akshay Kumar Singh, one of the four men convicted in the 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case, on Wednesday. The hearing on Singh's review plea was delayed by a day on Tuesday after Chief Justice of India SA Bobde recused himself from hearing the review plea.

CJI SA Bobde recused himself from the case because his nephew had represented Nirbhaya in a court earlier.

Nirbhaya's mother Asha Devi said she is very happy with the Supreme Court's order and all eyes will now be on Patiala House Court where Nirbhaya's parents have filed a petition to expedite death sentence given to the four convicts.

Convict's lawyer AP Singh asked Supreme Court for two weeks time to file mercy petition before the President before any death warrant is issued. He said his client has legal right to file mercy petition.

However, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta objected and said time prescribed to file mercy petitions is 7 days. "He cannot be granted more time.
It's his statement now that he will be moving Mercy petition before President," Mehta said.
